After weeks delay St Lawrence Seaways first ship grounded by ice floe

Apr.9--The St Lawrence Seaway opened this year with the 39,400-dwt bulker CWB Marquis running aground near Beauharnois outside Montreal.

The CWB Marquis, owned the Canadian Wheat Board, the first ship to take the seaway this season, ran aground aground after encountering a large ice floe, causing the ship to drag its anchor, reported the Montreal Gazette.

The 225-metre-long bulker and was carrying iron ore at the time of the grounding. The newly built ship was on its maiden voyage.

The 3,700-kilometre waterway from Montreal to mid-Lake Erie had already delayed its opening by one week. The St Lawrence Seaway Management Corp postponed the seaway's opening.

According to Transportation Safety Board of Canada spokesman Chris Krepski, investigators arrived at the ship shortly after 3pm to evaluate damage and look for evidence.
