Feb.15--DP WORLD's London Gateway plans to push ahead with plans to build a third berth at the UK's new deepsea hub port, 25 miles from central London. The third berth is scheduled to commence operations in the second half.
Secretary of State for Transport Patrick McLoughlin visited the state-of-the-art port with local members of parliament, to assess the new berth intended to increase deepsea access for ships carrying UK imports and exports.
The third berth will offer an additional 400 metres of quay length with a dredged to 17 metres, to handle the largest containerships. It has also developed technology to ensure the port remains open in bad weather.
Contracts have been awarded to Volker Fitzpatrick for civil and electrical works and four new quay cranes have been ordered from ZPMC.
CEO of the Middle Eastern terminal operator, Simon Moore, said: "We welcomed the global CEO for Prologis, Hamid Moghadam, and launched our 316,000 square foot joint venture distribution centre, which will be ready for occupation later this year.
