May.13--THE International Cargo Handling Coordination Association (ICHCA), a non-governmental association for the industry, is hosting its first Cargo Transport Unit (CTU) Packing Roadshow at Harwich International Port's cruise terminal in Essex, UK on June 3.
The event will provide practical education on the new Code of Practice for the Packing of Cargo Transport Units (CTUs) due for release later this year that has been jointly developed by the International Maritime Organisation, International Labour Organisation and United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.
The new Code is designed to address the high number of incidents along the transport chain caused by incorrect loading that result in damage, loss, injury or death, a statement from ICHCA said.
The new Code of Practice will be applicable to all types of cargo moving in containers, trailers, swap bodies and railcars. It will provide parties along the supply chain with information about their responsibilities, including details on how to pack and secure packages and cargo items.
It also places a responsibility on the shipper to declare correctly the composition of the cargo, as well as the gross mass of the packed CTU.
The roadshow will include talks by an expert panel of speakers and professionals from across the cargo chain, as well as brainstorming workgroups to address key questions around disseminating the Code and training and educating packers.
Delegates will also receive a free copy of the CTUpack e-learning course from EXIS Technologies, developed in partnership with the TT Club.
