Latvia leads in transit business in three Baltic countries: report

     April 3  -- Latvia is leading in the sector of shipment cargo business among three Baltic countries, statistics of the first two months indicated.

  According to the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia, 27.708 million tons of cargo have been received and dispatched in the ports of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in January and February this year.

  Though transshipment cargo volume remained unchanged in comparison with the same period last year, Latvian ports reloaded 48.8 percent of all cargo, Estonian 27.8 percent and Lithuanian 23.4 percent.

  The Baltic News Services (BNS) reported that Riga port is the leading port in cargo turnover among Baltic ports, with the traffic load 6.527 million tons, or 19.5 percent increase. Ventspils port with 5.911 million tons of reloaded cargo, or 8.1 percent increase, ranked the second.

  Lithuanian Klaipeda port remains the third with 5.47 million tons, or 10.8 percent decrease, and Estonian Tallinn port with cargo tonnage 5.378 million tons, or 0.1 percent decrease, is the fourth.

  In 2013, the volume of reloaded cargo in the Baltic ports totaled 155.736 million tons, a 4-percent decrease in comparison with 2012. Latvian ports reloaded 45.3 percent, Estonian 27.5 percent and Lithuanian 27.2 percent.
